The Spaniel was designed and built in Poland in 1979 as a single-handed ocean-going vessel. In 1980, Polish yachtsmen took top honours in the Ostar 80 race after a 19-day westward crossing of the Atlantic. From 1982 to 1997, the Spaniel was used by the Academy of Sciences for research, cruises and occasional races.

Privately owned since 1997, Spaniel is involved in sail training for young Latvians and has been successful in numerous Tall Ships Races.
