The Belem began her career as a cargo ship carrying sugar from the West Indies, and cocoa and coffee from Brazil and French Guiana to Nantes. The ship now has more than 120 years of history, having belonged to the second Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, who renamed her Fantome III, and even crossed the oceans under the command of Baron Sir Arthur Ernest Guinness.
Now back under the French flag, she has been converted to coastal navigation, offers introductory and discovery courses to enthusiasts, is used by the French Navy to train its mousses3 and appears at major gatherings of traditional old sailing ships.
The Belem has been listed as a historic monument since 27 February 1984.
