The Capitan Miranda was built in Spain in 1930 and began her career as a cargo ship. The ship is named after Uruguayan hydrographic captain Francisco Miranda (1868-1925), who served Uruguay as a member of the cabinet, secretary of war and later professor of marine geography at the Uruguay Naval Academy.

The Capitan Miranda was used as a hydrographic survey vessel until 1978. She then underwent a major restoration and today is dedicated to sail training.
